QUESTION: What is the Difference Between Musicmatch On-Demand and Yahoo Music Unlimited?
21 August 2005
A reader is planning to buy a Dell DJ portable music player, and wanted to know what the difference is between these services, both owned by Yahoo.
ANSWER:
- Yahoo Music Unlimited (YMU) lets you fill your portable player with rented music, while Musicmatch On-Demand (MMOD) does not. [Note: This is changing--Musicmatch on Demand is now offering a Portable subscription option and a rebate offer to Dell DJ buyers. (8/25/2005)]
- Yahoo Music Unlimited is just coming out of beta, while Musicmatch On-Demand has been around for a while.
- The software: Musicmatch Jukebox vs. Yahoo Music Engine. Musicmatch Jukebox has been around longer and is better for managing a digital music collection, BUT makes you pay to get the full featured "plus" version of the software.
- Yahoo Music Unlimited includes LAUNCHcast, the best personalized radio service, while Musicmatch On-Demand includes a better collection of pre-programmed and genre-specific radio stations. If you're willing to do the work of rating music, the LAUNCHcast offering is best for radio. Otherwise, Musicmatch radio is better.
- The price is the same.
