Today's New York Times reported that MSN Music has begun to sell downloads from the Smithsonian Folkways music collection, an archive of 30,000 songs of recorded Americana: folk, blues, field recordings, children's music, and poetry.
Recordings from notables Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger are included. The downloads, which cost $0.99 a piece, will be available exclusively from the Microsoft store through September, after which they will presumably become available from other downloading services.
To listen to some of this music for free, try the Internet radio station on the Smithsonian site or one of the Live365 stations(for VIP subscribers only) devoted to playing music from this collection.
