Chances are, you've heard about the Firefox Web browser. This latest version of the free Mozilla browser is being downloaded by the millions by Web users looking for a more secure, feature rich Web browser. I switched from Internet Explorer for two reasons: I like the tabbed browsing feature and I was sick of the constant stream of spyware that was flowing into my computer, courtesy of Internet Explorer.
Now, thanks to Hiawatha Bray at the Boston Globe, I've learned about a useful plugin called FoxyTunes, that lets you control your music player from within the Firefox browser. Popular player software like Musicmatch Jukebox, iTunes, Winamp, and Windows Media Player are supported among a number of others.
I use Musicmatch Jukebox and like the way FoxyTunes displays the currently playing song on my browser status bar, along with basic player controls that let me skip or pause songs. This applies whether I am playing my local MP3 files or listening to Musicmatch Radio or Musicmatch's online jukebox service.
The transition to Firefox was quite smooth and I now use Firefox for most of my browsing. Unfortunately, I still need to use Internet Explorer for accessing Web sites that are written to use Microsoft-only features. This includes the LAUNCHcast and Live365 Internet radio services.
